HARLEM SCHOOL OF THE ARTS, Renaisance Project
The 57-year-old Harlem School of the Arts at the Herb Alpert Center broke ground in the summer of 2019 on the $9.5 million dollar Renaissance Project, underwritten by legendary award-winning musician/philanthropist, Herb Alpert and the Herb Alpert Foundation, and was completed a year later in 2020. The award-winning building, which was originally designed by architect Ulrich Franzen, has received a major facelift. A main section of the austere brick façade has been replaced with a cutting-edge, angled glass curtained wall, offering the community and the public at large, a transparent view inside the facility where so many young lives have been enriched and given a sense of purpose and focus. The remainder of the brick exterior has been repaired, treated, and stained; windows replaced, exterior lighting, and new signage added.
The architectural team was led by Celia Imrey and Imrey Studios and included lead architect Eric Daniels and John Storyk of WSDG, a top architectural acoustic consulting organization, M.Arch Architects acting as the regulatory consultant and special inspections agency.
The Harlem School of the Arts at the Herb Alpert Center, New York City’s premier community arts institution, stands uniquely apart as the sole provider of arts education in four disciplines: music, dance, theatre, and art & design, all within our award-winning 37,000 square foot facility. The School’s reputation for artistic rigor and excellence attracts students of diverse socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds from the five New York City boroughs as well as Westchester County and the tristate area, which includes Connecticut and New Jersey. HSA’s alumni and faculty are counted among the most talented leaders in the arts.
